Lost and found

Misplaced your sunglasses or keys at the library?

Items found within and turned in to ASU Library locations will be kept at the main information desk for the respective branch. To claim an item, individuals must present sufficient identification and a physical description of the item.

ASU Library and ASU employees are not responsible for lost, found or damaged items belonging to individuals or organizations using library buildings and facilities. This also applies to lost and found items on campus.

Each ASU Library branch manages its lost and found independently of other branches, and each policy is as follows.

The inventory of the Design Library lost and found remains on-site indefinitely, and is transferred to the Tempe campus lost and found located at the Memorial Union as required by storage capacity, generally once per semester.

Most found items will be kept, however food items will be disposed of immediately and anything containing liquids will be emptied.

If an item that is turned in has identifying information, a reasonable attempt will be made to contact the owner. All Sun Cards and Pitchfork Cards that are found will be turned in to the Sun Devil Card Services office per their lost card policy.

When collecting found items, patrons will be asked to provide a physical description of the item and will be required to sign stating that the item has been picked up.

Any questions regarding Design and the Arts Library’s lost and found policies and procedures can be directed to the information desk via telephone at 480-965-6400.

Items turned in to the Downtown Library lost and found are held for a period of three months. Any unclaimed items left at the end of this period are considered forfeit and handled according to the discretion of library staff.

Valuable items such as laptops and phones may be held longer than three months at the discretion of library staff.

If an item turned in has sufficient identifying information, a reasonable attempt will be made to contact the owner. All Sun Cards and Pitchfork Cards that are found will be turned in to the Sun Devil Card Services office per their lost card policy.

Unclaimed items are held for the duration of the current semester. All items that remain unclaimed at the close of the semester will be deposited at the West Valley campus lost and found, which is located at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex (SDFC).

Items to be collected and stored in the Fletcher Library lost and found are up to the discretion of the attending staff member, but generally include:

  • Clothing and accessories (e.g., sweaters, jackets, jewelry, glasses and sunglasses, etc.)
  • Electronics (e.g., ear buds, headphones, charging cords and cases, devices, USB thumb drives, etc.)
  • Personal items (e.g., water bottles, wallets, ID and credit cards, notebooks, textbooks, personal books, etc.)

In order to claim an item, patrons will be asked to provide a description of the item in question. If the item is labeled with the patron’s name, they will be asked to present a photo ID.

Any questions regarding lost and found policies and procedures at Fletcher Library can be directed to the information desk via telephone at 602-543-8502.

Depending on volume, lost and found items are transported to the Tempe campus lost and found (located at the Memorial Union information desk) every 2 to 4 weeks, regardless of how long an individual item has been held. On this schedule, items that are not accepted by the Memorial Union (e.g., water bottles, personal hygiene items, anything deemed unhealthy or unsafe, etc.) are either disposed of or donated to a charitable organization at the discretion of library staff.

Items left in lockers in non-accordance with ASU Library’s locker policy will be considered lost and will be handled according to Hayden Library’s lost and found policies and procedures. When retrieving locker items from the lost and found, in addition to providing a description of the items and proper identification, patrons will be required to provide the number of the locker the items were left in.

Sun Cards and Pitchfork Cards turned in to the Hayden Library lost and found will be taken to the Sun Devil Card Services office per their lost card policy.

If an item turned in is bearing sufficient identifying information (e.g., state-issued identification card or driver’s license, passport or visa, bank-issued cards, etc.), a reasonable attempt will be made to contact the owner. Once contact is attempted, the item will be filed per applicable lost and found policy.

For general information about what items are not accepted into the lost and found, please refer to Student Services Manual (SSM) 801-05: Lost and Found Items.

Any questions regarding Hayden Library’s lost and found policies and procedures can be directed to the information desk via telephone at 480-965-3605.

Items turned in to or found at the Music Library will be held for the duration of the current semester. Any unclaimed items remaining at the end of the semester will then be taken to the Music office for transport to the Tempe campus lost and found located at the Memorial Union.

If an item that is turned in has identifying information, a reasonable attempt will be made to contact the owner. To collect a found item, you will be asked to provide a description of the item and will be required to sign stating that the item has been picked up.

Any questions regarding lost and found policies and procedures at the Music Library can be directed to the information desk via telephone at 480-965-3513.

Depending on present volume, the inventory of Noble Library’s lost and found is offloaded to the Tempe campus lost and found at the Memorial Union approximately once per week. The same schedule is used for remitting lost Sun Cards to the Sun Devil Card Services office.

As the campus lost and found does not accept water bottles, these items are held onto for a period of approximately one month and then are disposed of at the discretion of overseeing staff members.

In addition to collecting lost and found items, Noble Library also maintains a record of items reported as lost but not yet turned in and will make a reasonable attempt to contact the owner if the item is turned in at a later time.

Items are generally held for the period of one semester. At the discretion of library staff, any unclaimed items left at the end of this time will be taken to the Student Union, held on to by the library for use by students (charging cords, other basic tech items), given away on a first-come-first-serve basis or discarded.

Items of all types will be accepted into the lost and found, however an item may be turned away or discarded if it poses a risk or hazard (such as perishable food items).

If a found item bears sufficient identifying information, a reasonable attempt will be made to contact the owner, typically via email.

If your lost item is not currently in the lost and found, staff will make note and may attempt to contact you if the item is turned in at a later time.

Any questions regarding lost and found policies and procedures at the Polytechnic campus Library can be directed to the information desk via telephone at 480-727-1037.

Due to its physical location within the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law as well as its shortened hours, the Law library does not collect lost and found items.
