It’s Love Data Week, and many folks have been discussing the 2023 NIH data sharing policy and asking if datasets shared in the ASU Research Data Repository are available to people outside of ASU. The answer is YES; published datasets in the repository are available to anyone worldwide.

Here are key areas in the repository complies with the NIH’s requirements for selecting a repository for Data Resulting from NIH-Supported Research:

  • Unique Persistent Identifiers - every published dataset gets its digital object identifier (DOI), making your dataset citable for the long haul. We also support unique identifiers for people. All ASU Researchers publishing their data must use their ORCID iD as part of their submission. Don't have an ORCID iD? Visit ASU ORCID to get your identifier now!
  • Metadata - The repository’s advanced metadata is designed explicitly to encourage the discovery and reuse of research data and is continually updated to comply with Schema.org and Google Dataset Search.
  • Free and Easy Access - Absolutely! There is no charge for accessing research data in the repository.
  • Provenance - We provide transparent information on who uploaded the datasets and made changes. All this information is available in the version tab of every dataset record.
  • Curation and Quality Assurance - The ASU Library works with you to help make your research data as FAIR as possible and provides guidance on how to determine what data should or should not be shared.
  • Clear Use Guidance - The data repository has terms of use and a service scope statement. We also provide choices for appropriate Creative Commons licenses and custom-use terms for your datasets.
  • Security and Integrity - while publicly accessible, no one can alter the data in the repository. Changes to the submitted datasets are only through administrative access by the dataset owners.
  • Common Formats - The repository accepts all data formats and will provide accessible versions of spreadsheets as tabular files and images.
  • Retention Policy - The ASU Library supports datasets for as long as they are deemed beneficial and extends our preservation of datasets for at least ten years. You can count on the stability of your data for much longer than the NIH 3-year minimum requirements.

The ASU Research Data Repository is just one of the ways we support ASU's mission of advancing research and discovery for public value and assuming a fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities we serve.
