The Memoirs of Catherine the Great

Translated by Mark Cruse and Hilde Hoogenboom

This is the first translation for which the original manuscripts, which are in French in Catherine II’s own hand, were consulted in the archives in Moscow. A substantial introduction examines this last in a series of four memoirs written over forty years as a memoir Catherine wrote in the tradition of Plutarch’s parallel lives of the Romans and Greeks to compare her character and life with that of her husband Peter III.
