Orin Fernglove is an immortal—an Ever—and the head of the mighty House Fernglove. The Ferngloves own the nearby mines and, with their magic that can even move stars, they know no rejection. When Edira's siblings are infected with the Plague, an incurable disease that is decimating the city, Orin makes a surprising offer. If Edira moves into the Fernglove estate to help research a cure for the plague, he will slow the progress of her siblings' illness as much as possible.

But the rest of the Fernglove family is less confident in Edira's abilities, and may be more dangerous than the spreading disease itself. As Edira and Orin race against time to save their siblings' lives, the family's impeccable facade begins to crack. And from behind the crumbling walls, the true reason Edira was called to the estate emerges... along with a dark force that could destroy the Fernglove house with a single move.
