Build your Data Management and Sharing Plan

Your guide towards a successful plan

Research data management is the organization, management, publication and preservation of research products. As an important part of the research process, agency and funder mandates now require the submission of Data Management and Sharing Plans which describe how you will meet the data sharing requirements that are being instituted by federal agencies

DMSPs need not be extensive and even if not required, they provide a useful mechanism for you to plan out your data needs such as:

  • Roles and responsibilities for producing and managing data.
  • What are the expected data outputs and technology needs to produce and manage.
  • How you are going to store and preserve your data. Agencies now require data sharing and preservation using appropriate digital repositories.
  • Data sharing: not all data needs to be or can be shared. DMSPs allow you to work through how to handle your data sharing needs.

At ASU you are not alone when it comes to creating your DMSP. In partnership with ASU Library, the Research Data Management Office under Knowledge Enterprise provides research data management services and support

Additionally, ASU supports the use of the Data Management Plan Tool. The DMP Tool is a free online resource that guides you through the DMSP creation process with useful funder templates and guidance. As an institutional partner, ASU researchers have the ability to:

  • Request Feedback: Send your DMSP to the ASU Research Data Management Office and ASU Library data experts for feedback within the DMP Tool.
  • Export completed plans: Export plans in a variety of formats.
  • Register your plan and make it public: Receive a DMP ID that allows you to link it with your ORCID and share with agencies.
