Best Data Driven Map (dynamic)

The competition for Best Data Driven Map of the Grand Canyon (dynamic) recognizes achievement in cartographic representation through creative, effective, beautiful, and insightful uses of geospatial data. The integration of data should be a key component of the project. Dynamic maps are produced as interactive applications that can take many formats, including web-based, tablet or mobile devices. It may be an infographic (or story map) where maps are a key component or may be a single map.

 

Prizes

Top place winners in each category will win -- at a minimum -- a $100 Amazon gift card, a certificate of achievement, and cartographic bragging rights. 

 

Eligibility and rules

  • Open to students currently enrolled in a certificate, undergraduate or graduate program
  • Individual submissions only (no group submissions)
  • Limit one submission per person
  • All entries submitted must be original cartographic products (data sources must be documented)
  • Map entry must be in its finished state
  • Map should contain an interactive element(s) and not be static
  • Entries must focus on some aspect of the Grand Canyon
  • Integration and analysis of data must be a main component of the map

Judging criteria

Eligible submissions to the Best Data Driven (dynamic) map of the Grand Canyon region will be judged along the following criteria:

  • Content:  Is the map rich in information? Could someone looking at the map gain new insights about the Canyon?
  • Content: Does the author use reliable data sources? Are the data sources used well-documented?
  • User Interactivity: Does the interactivity of the map invite exploration and provide an easy to use interface (zoom control, popups, navigation, etc)? Are all interactive components of the map fully functional?
  • Information flow: Does the information on the map flow and tell a complete story?
  • Dynamic Elements: Do the pop ups provide relevant information? Are they formatted clearly?
  • Cartographic design: Are the map elements balanced and readable?
  • Creativity: Does the map tell a unique story about the Grand Canyon? Is the design and interface innovative?
  • Theme: Does the map effectively communicate the intended message?

DEADLINE EXTENDED! Submissions must be made by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, 2019

 

 

How to submit

 

To submit your original cartographic production for consideration in the Best Data Driven (dynamic) category of the Grand Canyon Map Competition, please complete the Grand Canyon Map Competition entry form, which will allow you to upload your file information, including the URL for the entry. Entries should be visible to the public without needing a login. Please note that the form will require you to sign in using a Google Account. If you have problems accessing the form, please send a note to mapgeo@asu.edu.

 

Please provide a short (max 200 words) descriptive statement that provides information relevant to your map submission, including purpose of your map, how it may be used, what is the target audience, how was it created, what were your thoughts behind the project’s design, etc.

In addition to the descriptive statement, be prepared to provide the following information with your submission:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Email
  • Student Status
  • Name of Institution
  • Map Title
  • Map platform (mobile, web-based, tablet)
