Sanford Biggers: Moon Medicine
The first-ever scholarly exhibition catalog dedicated to Sanford Biggers despite international accolades prior, this publication highlights the diverse, multidisciplinary practice that is indicative of his work. A constellatory look at primarily new works, the exhibition examines ideas culminating from a range of influences: African American history, hip-hop culture, Italian Baroque sculpture, Japanese Zen Buddhism and Caribbean Vodoun to name a few. Depicting the drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, performance and video of the exhibition at Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum as well as previous works, the catalog assembles not only the pieces themselves, but elements of reference and definition that contribute meaning to each piece. With the fluidity and complexity of meaning, Biggers' work reflects simultaneously the Black American experience, a singular, unique journey and a universal narrative.
