ASU Library is pleased to announce the launch of the ASU Open Access Publishing Fund

This fund is designed to support ASU authors who wish to make their scholarly articles freely available immediately upon publication.

Co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Knowledge Enterprise, the fund is managed by ASU Library. All current ASU faculty, academic professionals, staff and students are eligible to apply, for a maximum award of $2000 per application.

“The Open Access Publishing Fund is a demonstration of ASU’s commitment to connecting our scholarship to the community,” said Anali Maughan Perry, head of Open Science and Scholarly Communication at ASU Library.

“By supporting our authors, we remove the financial barriers that discourage them from making their work open access, as well as the paywalls that discourage readers from engaging with their scholarship to have an impact on real-world decisions and applications.”

While there is no deadline, eligible requests will continue to be approved as long as funds are available.

Here’s what ASU authors need to know about the new fund.

Key Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for funding, the application must meet the following criteria:

Author Affiliation: The applicant must be the corresponding author and a current ASU affiliate, for whom ASU is their home institution. Please note: Former Students and Postdoctoral Fellows are also eligible if their manuscript was accepted within one year of graduation or separation and was submitted to the publisher while they were still affiliated with ASU.

Funding History: The author has not received an award from the fund during the current fiscal year (on or since July 1, 2025).

Journal Quality: The journal must either be listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals or be listed by SCImago as a first or second quartile (Q1 or Q2) journal in their field.

How to Apply

  1. Submit your application after your article has been accepted for publication. You will need to attach a copy of the correspondence documenting the acceptance of your manuscript for publication.
  2. Make Full Payment: These funds are distributed as a reimbursement. You are responsible for providing payment for the full article processing charge amount to the publisher.
  3. Receive Reimbursement: Once approved, you will need to provide the publisher's invoice and your receipt indicating payment of the invoice. They will be submitted to Workday for processing, and you will receive a reimbursement of up to $2,000 within two weeks.

Full details can be found on the ASU Library website, and applicants are encouraged to contact Researcher Support with questions about journal eligibility.

“We’re thrilled that we’ve already supported several authors in publishing their work and we continue expanding awareness about the benefits of open access!” said Perry.
