Addressing the major issues surrounding the use of nuclear power, 29 social scientists with extensive involvement in the assessment and management of nuclear technology discuss critical areas of concern-problem recognition, risk estimation and policy formation and implementation. The authors appraise fundamental policy issues and examine the controversies surrounding specific power plants, covering a broad range of topics, among them the acceptability of nuclear risk; spatial aspects of power plant siting and the nuclear fuel cycle; land-use controls and other options to mitigate potential hazards; socioeconomic impacts of nuclear power plants; emergency planning around nuclear facilities; and equity issues concerning waste disposal.

Bios

Martin Pasqualetti is a professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at ASU and co-director of Energy Policy Information Council. General research interests encompasses energy and society, energy and land use, and renewable energy development. Current research concentrates on the acceptance of renewable energy landscapes and recycling energy landscapes.

David Pijawka is a professor of urban planning at ASU's School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning. His research focuses on sustainable planning and design, disaster management and recovery, environmental justice, and Native American community planning.
