Concepts of Physical Fitness: Active Lifestyles for Wellness (17th ed.)

This college text teaches concepts and self-management skills that promote good fitness, health and wellness throughout life. Each of the 19 chapters includes worksheets designed to help students master self-management skills such as self-assessment and planning, goal setting, self-monitoring, time management and personal portfolio creation. Information focuses on healthy lifestyle choices that lead to disease prevention and longevity such as participating regularly in activities from five steps of the Physical Activity Pyramid, eating well and managing stress.

The book is based on the HELP philosophy (Health for Everyone for Lifetime in a very Personal way) and uses the Stairway to Fitness, Health and Wellness to help students move from dependence to independent problem solving and decision making. Versions of the book have been in publication since 1968. It earned the McGuffey Award of the Text and Academic Authors Association for long-term excellence.

Bios

Charles B. (Chuck) Corbin is an ASU professor emeritus with more than 100 books and over 200 journal articles to his credit. An internationally recognized expert in physical activity, health and wellness, his honors include induction into the SHAPE America Hall of Fame and the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition Lifetime Achievement Award.

An ASU doctoral grad, Gregory J. Welk is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Iowa State University. He is an expert in physical activity promotion and assessment who has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journals and books and is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and of the National Kinesiology Association.

An ASU graduate and current professor of psychology at ASU, William R. Corbin is a nationally recognized expert in health psychology, published in the areas of behavioral medicine and addictive behaviors, with particular expertise in high-risk behaviors. His research is funded by NIH (NIAAA). He is currently the director of clinical training at ASU.
