The Bilingual Press | Editorial Bilingüe (BP | EB), a pioneering publisher of Chicano and Latino/a/x literature since 1973, is relaunching under new leadership with a bold new open access initiative: the librito series.
“The librito series honors our legacy of producing high-quality art books, now in a reimagined format at an affordable price and in a convenient size,” said Anita Huízar-Hernández, BP | EB Publisher and Managing Editor. “Through the librito series, we aim to provide broad, bilingual access to the complexity and beauty that pervades Latino and Chicano art. We are honored to present this series in both full color print copies as well as open access digital copies.”
The principles of open access are at the core of the mission of the Bilingual Press | Editorial Bilingüe, which was founded to amplify voices overlooked by mainstream publishing. After a period of dormancy following the passing of founding director Gary Keller in 2020, BP | EB is returning with a renewed commitment to accessibility, affordability, and cultural preservation.
The first librito, "Día de los Muertos: A Chicano Arts Legacy" by Mathew Sandoval, was released in early October. This book explores the rich cultural history of Día de los Muertos as expressed through Chicano art, continuing BP | EB’s tradition of publishing works that celebrate and interrogate the Chicano experience.
