A new exhibit at the Downtown Phoenix campus Library features unique fiber and multimedia art for the ASU community to explore.
This spring semester, the ASU community is invited to visit "Abstract Fiber Art: Layer, Cut and Reveal" by artist Debra Goley, on display until May 22, 2026, during regular library hours.
Debra Goley is an award-winning multimedia artist, instructor and designer based in Arizona. She began her career as an architect, and in the past decade, Goley has been working in fiber arts. Her use of various materials in her pieces encourages viewers to think about textiles and materials in new ways.
“Like a collage, Debra Goley’s cutting and layering is an important part of the structure of her art,” said Maja Kleihs, a public services coordinator at the Downtown Phoenix campus Library. “She also incorporates other media, such as paint and small pieces of reflective material into her art. I find her stitching particularly interesting since it is practical, securing the pieces of fabric, but it also varies in thread colors, designs, and types of stitches, creating swirling, geometric, floral and almost topographic backgrounds and overlays.”
The Vault Gallery, located inside the downtown library, provides a welcoming space for students studying for class or meeting up with friends. For Kleihs, it's also an opportunity to make art accessible for everyone.
“I studied art history and museum studies in college and I wholeheartedly believe in the value of the arts…While an exhibit of art may not be someone’s first thought of what libraries can offer, I think exhibiting art in a space like a library lowers the barrier of entry for experiencing art. I hope our library can serve as a platform for local artists and an inspirational space for our patrons,” said Kleihs.
Ultimately, the art on the library walls is an invitation to be inspired by Goley’s artworks and add a creative spark for visitors.
“I hope ASU students, staff, and faculty will enjoy seeing the brightness of and details within these pieces,” said Kleihs. “Debra uses many bright colors, and they help bring lightness to our library. With the way Debra uses fabric and thread, her works have intricacies that are best seen in person, and I hope they enjoy being able to explore these features up close.”
