The Map and Geospatial Hub is pleased to be hosting PHXGeo once again for an OpenStreetMap mapathon. PHXGeo is a community-based meetup group for those in the Phoenix area who like maps, GIS, OpenStreetMap, cartography, and anything in between -- a natural Hub collaborator.

Example showing OpenStreetMap covering Arizona State University Tempe Campus.

This mapathon will feature how to use the Open Street Map (OSM) editing session with Java OpenStreetMap (JOSM) map data editing software.

OSM is a crowdsourced geographic database open to everybody. JOSM is a specialized application that allows for more efficient editing of OSM data.

This special workshop session will be led by an OpenStreetMap "Super Mapper" who goes by the OSM handle "Dr Kludge". Dr. Kludge has made thousands of edits to Open Street Map, most of which contributed to improving metro Phoenix's representation on the map.

Dr. Kludge will be guiding workshop participants on how to use JOSM to more effectively make edits to the ever-growing OpenStreetMap database.

Be sure to bring a laptop (and a mouse is helpful for editing minor details). It is also highly recommended you download JOSM beforehand. After downloading JOSM, you'll want to download via File > Preferences > (Outlet icon) the following Plugins: building_tools, continuousDownload

Twenty (20) desktop computer workstations are available for this workshop. Alternatively, participants can perform the workshop activities using their personal laptop computers.

While not required, please do register on the PHXGeo Meetup event page: Fall 2019 OpenStreetMap Mapathon
