Workshop: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Digital Humanities

This workshop format will consist of two interactive sessions. Digital Humanities scholars from the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies (SHPRS) will begin with a general introduction to the technology and the ways historians have used it, including some of SHPRS’ own graduate students.

This session will conclude with a discussion and Q&A, and we welcome input from participants who would like to discuss geospatial problems and possibilities with their own historical research or teaching. The second session involves a hands-on tutorial using historical data in a GIS. Participants in the second session are encouraged to familiarize themselves with The Geospatial Historian online tutorial before attending, particularly the ArcGIS lessons found at https://geospatialhistorian.wordpress.com/lessons/.

This event is organized by the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies’ Dr. Joshua MacFadyen and Daniel Milowski.
