Internationally acclaimed author Leslie Marmon Silko, Laguna Pueblo, will deliver the fall Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture, and Community, on Thursday, October 8 at 7 p.m. at Phoenix’s Heard Museum. This semi-annual lecture series is held through a partnership between the Heard Museum and Arizona State University.

The evening will begin with a reading by Silko from her forthcoming memoir, Turquoise Ledge, followed by an informal discussion with the audience.

Silko is best known for her universally-praised novel Ceremony, which was first published in 1977 to rave reviews. It continues to be the American Indian novel most often set on college and university syllabi, and is one of the few individual works by any Native author to have received book-length critical assessments. Ceremony’s message of healing and reconciliation between races and people resonates with both Native and non-Native readers to this day.

Silko has won prizes, fellowships, and grants from such sources as the National Endowment for the Arts and The Boston Globe. She was the youngest writer to be included in The Norton Anthology of Women’s Literature for her short story “Lullaby.” In 1981 she won a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant. Silko has continued to be a force in American Indian literature in both the fiction and non-fiction genres.

The lecture series is sponsored by the Heard Museum and Arizona State University’s American Indian Studies Program, Department of English, Department of History, Labriola Center and Women and Gender Studies Program.

You are invited to help us build Why Arizona?
All are invited to attend this year’s Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture and Community, featuring Wilma Mankiller and titled Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People. The lecture will take place on Thursday October 2, 2008, at 7pm at the Heard Museum. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Wilma Mankiller served for ten years as the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Her work as a consultant and speaker on Native issues has been acknowledged by many honors and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom—one of the two highest civilian awards in the United States. Mankiller has 18 honorary university doctorates, and has been a Chubb Fellow at Yale and a Montgomery Fellow at Dartmouth. She served as the Morse Chair Professor of Law and Politics at the University of Oregon in the fall of 2005, and has presented more than 100 lectures at universities, and published more than a dozen papers in journals and newspapers. Among Mankiller’s books are the autobiography, Mankiller: A Chief and Her People (1993), which became a national best-seller, and A Reader’s Companion to the History of Women in the U.S. (1998), co-edited with Barbara Smith, Gloria Steinem, Gwendolyn Mink, and Marysa Navarro. Her book, Every Day is a Good Day (2004), a collection of “profound yet simple words from strong women” (Booklist), contains essays by contemporary Native women on issues of Indigenous spirituality, sovereignty, and culture.

For those unable to attend the lecture, it will be recorded and available at a future date via the Library Channel.

The ASU Libraries will be hosting a lecture by Robert McWhirter of the Maricopa County Legal Defenders Office on Wednesday September 17 to mark the annual celebration of Constitution Day.

Come Celebrate Constitution Day With Us!

The ASU Libraries will be hosting a lecture by Robert McWhirter of the Maricopa County Legal Defenders Office on Wednesday September 17 to mark the annual celebration of Constitution Day. The lecture, titled “Baby Don’t Be Cruel: What’s So “Cruel and Unusual” About The Eight Amendment?” will begin at 1:30pm in the Hayden Library, Room C6A/East, on the Tempe campus.

Lecture information: Crime and punishment and what is “cruel and unusual” is the prevailing theme of legislatures across the country. Also, nearly every term of the modern United States Supreme Court has a case involving the Eighth Amendment’s Cruel and Unusual Clause. This is a dynamic and engaging presentation on the history of the Eighth Amendment to the American Bill of Rights. This talk explores the real “intent” of the Bill of Right’s framers and the culture that produced the Eighth Amendment. From antiquity through the middle ages, this presentation has implications for today.

Mr. McWhirter’s lecture from last year’s Constitution Day event, How the Constitution Guarantees You a Trial, a Lawyer and a Chamber Pot! A Multimedia History of the 6th Amendment, is now available from iTunes U via the Library Channel.

Fred sits down with University Archivist Rob Spindler and former editor of the State Press and former director of the Alumni Association Don Dotts to tell the story of Arizona State College becoming a University

The Library Channel helps celebrate the 50th anniversary of Arizona State University with a new series of podcasts this fall. The historic “name change” drive, a singular moment in the university’s and state’s history, transformed Arizona State College into Arizona State University through an unprecedented statewide referendum that was approved by Arizona citizens in the general election of November 4th, 1958.

In this first episode, we are joined by former editor of the State Press and former director of the Alumni Association Don Dotts and University Archivist Rob Spindler to set the scene and illustrate Arizona State College and student life in 1958. Don will also talk about the students’ support of the initiative process, their march on the capitol, the roll of the State Press, opposition to the process and much, much more.

Download Episode(MP3 Audio)

To honor this heritage, and the vast progress that has been made in the last half century, ASU will be celebrating throughout the year at a variety of events. The university as a whole will also look back and reflect on that special moment in 1958 and what it means for the university in 2008.

Materials can be dropped off at libraries on all ASU campuses

The Arizona State University Libraries are calling on local schools, individuals, and organizations to donate new and used English-language materials to help rebuild school libraries in Sichuan Province, site of the 8.0 earthquake that shook that region on May 12. As of May 22, the death toll stood at 51,151 and another 288,431 people were injured. The quake destroyed many schools and thousands of other buildings.

A partner of leading Chinese university libraries, the ASU Libraries plans to send the books to Juyuan Middle School in Dujiangyan City, Sichuan. That school, now operating in tents, lost 278 students and six teachers in the quake. Arizona State University’s sister institution and strategic partner Sichuan University is located only 60 miles away from the epicenter of the earthquake.

The ASU Libraries are partnering with the University of Pittsburgh Library System (ULS) on this drive. University Librarian Sherrie Schmidt and ULS director Rush Miller will travel to China in September to present some of the books to school officials.

Donated materials, English language books, CDs, and DVDs in literature, history, science, and the arts, must be in good condition and appropriate for children in grades 7 through 12.
“Rebuilding School Libraries, Sichuan Earthquake” and can be brought to any of the following ASU Libraries: Hayden Library, Noble Science and Engineering Library, and Music Library, on the Tempe campus, the Library at the Downtown Phoenix campus, the Library at the Polytechnic campus, and Fletcher Library at the West campus. Donations will be accepted from July 21 through August 15, 2008.

Those needing more information or assistance with their donation may call 480-965-3417.

On February 23, 2007 Alberto Ríos, Regents’ Professor of English, Arizona State University, gave the closing keynote to FORO 2007. He asks, “In the next century, so hungry for answers and so fearful of ideas, how do we move forward? And more than that, how do we move forward together?”

Along with self-reflective anecdotes, Alberto sends out six hopeful challenges to librarians as caring and thinking people:

Diversity: It is not a goal but a means by which we will arrive at something greater than we currently understand.

Invisible Populations: We need solutions not laws

Economics: We must move from a money economy to an idea economy.

Dialogue: We need to move back to true conversation. Half of language is listening. Are libraries listening and do they know how to listen?

Languages: With many languages come many answers. Languages are a richness and a solution, not a problem. Words are ideas, and ideas lead to vital and evolving solutions.

Education: It never fails us. An educated person learns how to solve problems. We will pay for education, but it always pays us back.

“Every pencil is filled with a book. It’s my job to know that, to believe it, and to act on it.” – Alberto Ríos

The Herberger College of the Arts School of Music and the ASU Libraries are proud to welcome to the show eminent composer, percussionist and environmentalist John Luther Adams, who is in a week-long residency at Arizona State. Assistant Professor of Music History and Literature, Sabine Feisst and Christopher Mehrens, Head of the Music Library, join host Fred McIlvain for a truly interesting and enlightening discussion of John’s life and works. We will also hear excerpts from John’s compositions throughout the program.

Adams has created a unique musical world grounded in the Northern wilderness landscapes and indigenous cultures, and in natural phenomena from the songs of birds to elemental noise of crashing glaciers. Much of his music is contemplative, expansive and pictorial. But he also composed percussive and rhythmically vigorous works inspired by Inuit drumming. Adams’ works for orchestra, ensembles, percussion and electronic media have been widely performed and recorded by prominent musicians.

Adams came to classical music through a fascination with progressive rock. After music studies at the California Institute of the Arts, he moved to Alaska where he worked as an environmentalist fighting for the preservation of pristine wilderness areas. These experiences led him to explore the ideal of “Sonic Geography,” a music of place deeply resonating with the philosophies of Deep Ecology and Bioregionalism.

Free concerts, a sound installation, roundtables, workshops and an exhibit run April 23-27.

Dr. David Schildkret, chair of the choral program at the school of music and religion and philosophy bibliographer Rachel Leket-Mor join Fred McIlvain and Tammy Allgood to discuss a month long celebration of Jewish musical heritage at ASU:

Ways of Happiness, Paths of Peace

The series focuses on the music of Leonard Bernstein and Ernest Bloch, culminating in a performance of Bernstein’s Jeremiah Symphony and Bloch’s Sacred Service on April 26 featuring the combined forces of three ASU choirs, the ASU Symphony, and faculty soloists. The series includes chamber music concerts, lectures, films, a library exhibition, and a symposium in addition to the final concert.

Each year the School of Music puts on a concert combining the choir and symphony. This year the focal point of the events are Bloch and Bernstein.

In the podcast we discuss items in the exhibit such as traditional and popular “living” items provided by David from his own family including his father’s prayer shawls and falacteries. We also hear about the music of Bloch and Bernstein and provide and interesting mini-biography on Ernest Bloch (1880-1956). This highly entertaining conversation not only talks about the events here at the music library but also the practices of daily worship.

On Thursday March 22, 2007 the ASU Libraries and the Jewish Studies Program at ASU hosted a special event: An evening with Dr. Ann Kirschner, author of Sala’s Gift: My Mother’s Holocaust Story, in the Hayden Library on the ASU Tempe campus.

It was not until Sala (now 82) was scheduled for heart surgery in 1991 that she showed Ann a priceless collection of more than 350 letters and a diary from her years in the Nazi work camps, documents that she had kept carefully hidden in a cardboard box. She had risked her life to preserve these letters, hiding them from Nazi guards during line-ups, handing them off to friends, throwing them under a building, even burying them, but always managing somehow to take them with her from camp to camp. Scholars have declared this collection to be one of the great treasure troves of its kind. As the letters pass from the Kirschner family to history, they are becoming the genesis of many creative and scholarly works.

In the hands of Ann Kirschner, they form the basis of one of the most moving, inspiring, and eye-opening Holocaust stories in decades. SALA’S GIFT: My Mother’s Holocaust Story (Free Press: Fall 2006; $26.00) captures the horror of Sala’s astonishing odyssey through the Nazi labor camps—which are far less understood than the extermination camps—and deftly weaves the letters into a compelling narrative.

Topics include:

What it was like for Ann to discover her mother as a beautiful, brave teenager and how it changed their relationship.

The day-to-day moments of hope, despair, and details of wartime Poland, told from a unique perspective.

What happened to the rest of Sala’s family and why Sala kept the letters a secret for so many years.

Sala’s close friendship with Ala Gertner, who was hanged publicly at Auschwitz in the final days of the war for helping to organize the camp’s only armed uprising.

Why the letters, diary, photographs, and keepsakes are such a valuable part of survivor history.

What the letters reveal about the elaborate system of Nazi slave labor camps.

Part 2 of The Library Channel’s special three-part video series from FORO 2007: The Transborder Library Forum held in 2007 at Arizona State University.

Dennis S. Karjala, the Jack E. Brown Professor of Law at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, considers the basic notion of “intellectual property” and problems with its legal protection:

Why too much protection is a bad idea

Why enforcement is sometimes difficult

Why the scope and duration of intellectual property rights are limited in comparison with rights in tangible property

He describes how copyright subject matter has traditionally been distinguished from patent subject matter and how our treatment of computer software has blurred the issue and undermined attempts to make sensible information policy decisions with respect to digital works.

Karjala then considers the enforcement problems for copyright-protected works that the internet has posed, such as P2P networks and the liability of internet service providers for infringements that occur on or through their systems. He also talks about the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which potentially gives vastly expanded rights to copyright owners with little or no quid pro quo to content users. He considers the adequacy of the notion of “copying” as a measure of the protected property right, using the Google Library Project as an example. Finally, he outlines the Berne Convention and the WTO TRIPS agreement as the current source of international copyright law.

Part 1: Janice R. Lachance, Special Libraries Association CEO, a member of the US delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society 2005 and the UN Internet Governance Forum 2006, discusses her role with the SLA and the role technology and the Internet play in a global library network.

FORO began in 1989 at a local Arizona library conference where librarians from United States and Mexico discussed the need to create a network where they could meet and discuss issues of common interest while exchanging information and resources across borders.

The theme for this years conference is, “Bridging the Digital Divide-Crossing All Borders.” Each episode includes one of the three keynote speeches which address how libraries can facilitate access and exchange of information, resources, and culture through technology, “… crossing all borders.”

Homecoming is an opportunity for alumni to come back and remember “the good old days,” share their experiences with old friends and faculty, and see what has changed at their alma matter. Rob Spindler will talk about the purpose and history of the event, including the very first homecoming celebration back in 1926. We will also hear how the archives, acting as a repository for homecoming memorabilia and stories, are preserving the student perspective of ASU history and about the library’s participation in the event.
