Student Computers Get Virtual Facelift

Students logging into library computers this fall may notice a big change in what they see … or they may not. Staring Monday August 25, the student computers in the libraries on the Tempe and West campuses will have the same software configuration as the computers in the university computing sites. The libraries are happy to be collaborating with the University Technology Office to provide a more consistent computing experience for ASU students.

There are a few minor differences in the libraries’ computing configuration:

  • Printing will continue to require swiping of a SunCard (and use of SunDollars) at designated print stations in each library
  • Chat With the HelpDesk option, providing real time technical assistance from the Library Systems Help Desk, is only available on library computers
  • The newly updated ASU Libraries web site will be the default web page on all web browsers on library computers

Please contact the Library Systems Help Desk with any questions about computing in the libraries.

Fletcher Library Introduces New Public Computing System

This summer Fletcher Library will introduce a new computing system for our community users. As with many public libraries in the area, computer users will need to utilize a card and make a reservation to use these computers. The new computer system configuation will go into effect on August 11.

What Do You Need?

You will need to use either a PC-Reservation Card (non ASU affiliated customers) or ASU ID number to sign up.

How do I Get a PC Reservation Card?

If you are not an ASU affiliate, please go to the Circulation Desk to sign up for a PC Reservation card. You will need to show a government issued identification card at the time of application. High school students with current school photo IDs may also register for a PC Reservation Card.

Acceptable IDs include:

  • Driver’s license
  • University ID (from another university)
  • Community College ID?
  • Military ID
  • Passport
  • Current, valid high school photo ID

Once you have your card you’ll have everything you need to make your own reservations.

Can I Sign Up Anonymously?

No, we are not able to allow anonymous users based on university policies. An official ID must be used to get a PC Reservation Card.

Where are the Public Computers and the Reservation Station?

The public computers will be against the north wall across from the Circulation Desk. The reservation station will be located in the same area, near the public computers.

What if I Need More Time?

If no one is waiting while you are working, the system will automatically offer you the opportunity to renew for additional time. You are, however, limited to 90 minutes of reservation computer use per day.

Why the Change?

We have limited resources available to us, and need to ensure equitable access to our limited number of public computers for all non-ASU affiliated patrons.

We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this transition causes. Please stop by the Circulation Desk with any questions.

’s University Technology Officer Adrian Sannier talks to the University Libraries about IT’s new Technology Strategy, the four core elements of the strategy, and the University Libraries central role in the strategy.

In part one of our three part series, Sannier describes how the current, “near follower” technology strategy needs to be challenged. The university, as a vertically integrated industry, needs to let go of technologies it helped to create, and look outside the university to form strategic alliances. He then describes the four core businesses in the technology strategy:

(1) Academic or Learning Technology: university needs to lead the way;

(2) Research Technology: new infrastructure of large data sets;

(3) Fifth campus: online campus, one university many places; and

(4) the Library: digital presence. Stay tuned for our next podcast where Dr. Sannier discusses: Content Management Systems, e-Books, For Profit Publishing, e-Publishing, and Paperless University.
