Best Practices
Your audience greatly determines the type of content and distribution channels you will use. Look for a variety of content ideas (new initiatives, organizational partnerships, services, resources) that will catch the attention of your audience. Don’t forget to look outside your organization as well. Determine Appropriate Equipment Costs vary according to quality. Your decisions depend not only on your budget but on your technical expertise and ability to learn. Consider Storage Options Think about space and sustainability. With Self Hosting you get full control but there are storage and staff costs. Free External Web Hosts such as the Internet Archive, Google Video, You Tube, Feedburner are great resources and make your content more discoverable. Be aware of their limitations. Generate RSS Feeds Use a blog or Content Management system to generate your feed. For greater control, you can edit your own. There are many flavors of RSS but they are largely incompatible. For podcasts, use RSS 2.0. Develop Marketing/Promotion Plan Determine how best to promote your content. Explore all communication channels to reach your target audience. Also, maximize links to your content by utilizing sites outside your organization. Assessment Determine how you will measure success. If statistics are important, determine how you will collect them. Statistics from free external sites are not always reliable. |
