Goldwater.

In this episode Fred McIlvain talks with Arizona Historical Foundation archivists Linda Whitaker, Susan Irvin and Rebekah Tabah on the debut of the Personal and Political Papers of Senator Barry M. Goldwater after 5 years of heavy lifting (literally and figuratively) processing the collection.

When Barry Goldwater founded the Arizona Historical Foundation nearly 50 years ago, the last thing he would have expected is to find his papers in disarray. It is the ultimate irony, that a man who saved everything for posterity, would leave a collection requiring tough interventions so that it could be fully processed and cataloged. For all practical purposes this collection had remained largely unprocessed and hidden confounding researchers worldwide.

<itunes:summary>Welcome back to another edition of “Faculty and Librarians Team-up for Student Success” series. In this episode we bring you Kinesiology lecturers Jennifer Fay and Tannah Broman and Health Sciences Librarian Sheila Hofstetter. Learn from this lively discussion of how faculty sought to improve their students ability to quickly find the best research; a critical skill they knew would be vital to their success as students in Kinesiology 200, upper level courses, and future healthcare professionals. The team discusses their collaboration teaching students proper research methods, using the library system and finding available resources. They talk about the challenges they faced in moving students away from simple Google searches to progressing analyzing and synthesizing information, and Sheila illustrates methods dealing with information literacy and access issues.
This episode is a part of the ASU Faculty and Librarians Team-Up for Students Success series looking at new teaching methods and techniques that capture students’ imaginations, build confidence and provide the skills they need to succeed.

Fred sits down with University Archivist Rob Spindler and former editor of the State Press and former director of the Alumni Association Don Dotts to tell the story of Arizona State College becoming a University

The Library Channel helps celebrate the 50th anniversary of Arizona State University with a new series of podcasts this fall. The historic “name change” drive, a singular moment in the university’s and state’s history, transformed Arizona State College into Arizona State University through an unprecedented statewide referendum that was approved by Arizona citizens in the general election of November 4th, 1958.

In this first episode, we are joined by former editor of the State Press and former director of the Alumni Association Don Dotts and University Archivist Rob Spindler to set the scene and illustrate Arizona State College and student life in 1958. Don will also talk about the students’ support of the initiative process, their march on the capitol, the roll of the State Press, opposition to the process and much, much more.

To honor this heritage, and the vast progress that has been made in the last half century, ASU will be celebrating throughout the year at a variety of events. The university as a whole will also look back and reflect on that special moment in 1958 and what it means for the university in 2008.
